Ready to Run Model Irish Railway Wagons

The Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway ran from Enniskillen to Sligo (to be precise, Carrignagat Jct near Colloney). Its principal traffic was cattle from the West of Ireland for export to Britain through Londonderry or Belfast, via the Great Northern Railway of Ireland. When the line through Enniskillen was closed on 30 September 1957, it had no option but to close itself.

Half of the entire rolling stock of the SL&NCR was cattle wagons, mostly of the Railway Clearing House (RCH) type, also used by the GNR(I). However, it did own several others, probably bought from the GSR or one of its constiuents. Our two SL&NCR cattle wagons were in this category and appear to have been a little larger than the RCH type. No.158 (see below) was a fitted (or possibly merely vacuum piped) wagon which could be run in passenger trains and carries a board with a notice to that effect. No.110, however was unfitted and so dpoes not have that notice. As was the SL&NCR practice, both are modelled with their running numbers on the ends, as well as the wagon sides. The GNR also followed this practice in more affluent times and we will model an open wagon in this guise later.

No.110 has been specially commissioned for the Erne Model Railway Show on 19 September 2009.
